On April 13, 2029, Apophis (aptly named after the Egyptian god of Destruction) will arrive. Apophis (also known as "Asteroid 99942") is the size of a footbal stadium and is traveling at 30.73 KPS or nearly 69,000 miles per hour! If it hits us, the devastation could be enough to take out a small contenent, change the weather and disrupt life as we know it..
If it misses, it will still come very VERY close - closer even that our own navigational satellites!
Predictions change constantly and the simple fact is that, while we believe it will miss is, we really don't know - but even more terrifying than Apophis.
Another asteroid (2024-YR4 or “Anubis”, as I like to call it) will pick up where Apophis left off, arriving on December 22, 2032.
The good news is that Anubis is smaller. The bad news is that there is a distinct possibility it will hit and while the devastation won’t be as catastrophic as Apophis, it could take out a small city and potentially disrupt transportation, ommunications, infrastructure, supply chains, the power grid, utilities, etc.
Apophis and Anubis (2024 YR4) won’t be the only threats to our daily lives in the coming years and while there isn’t much we can do to stave off a civilization-ending asteroid, there is A LOT we can do to be prepared.
Unlike the dinosaurs, we can predict and plan ahead and this starts with educating ourselves on the potential threats, staying informed, and sharing what we learn. From there, we can identify a strategy that is best suited for us, where we live, resources, and the most likely complications/perils we will face. Water? Food? Electricity? Communication? Medications? Civil unrest? (to name a few)

And stay tuned. Apophis (and Anubis) are coming whether we like it or not, and I plan to be as prepared as possible when they do!
